PILATES/NM CONDITIONING

Developed by Josef Pilates (1880–1967) and originally named Contrology, Pilates is an exercise method that is performed on the mat and on specific apparatus. It is used today for both training and therapeutic purposes, as it focuses on strengthening with little joint stress the overall musculature and particularly the abdominal muscles. Although it has been know to particularly help those with back pain for this reason, pilates is a great supplement for anyone interested in developing core strength and achieving maximal movement health.
A pilates session focuses on form and biomechanical efficiency, stimulating the nervous system while developing greater body and posture awareness. Pilates can be used to help transform injurious movement patterns into healthy functional ones. Working to improve flexibility and alignment pilates promotes a harmonious muscle development. Breath is also emphasized as a key component to enhancing coordination and fluidity of movement.
People of all ages and levels can benefit from pilates, as it is a non-impactive and effective form of exercise. With proper guidance it can help improve one’s quality of movement which has important repercussions in daily life. Pilates is practiced in group classes or in individual sessions. If home practice is desired a program of conditioning in this method can easily be tailored to the individual for maximum benefits.
For dancers pilates can be an important adjunct to technique class, offering an opportunity to work on specific individual concerns in order to enhance movement performance.
